Natasha Baker Artist Statement

I paint in realism, endeavoring to portray my subjects so that they appear realistic, yet for my artworks to still look like paintings. I love to use focused lighting in my artwork, playing with the light and darkness around my subjects. Whether I'm painting animals or objects, I try to bring out their beauty through my use of light and colour. My preferred mediums are oil paints, using the alla prima or wet on wet method, and pastels.

I paint a variety of subjects, with a special love of animals, still life and water. Where I see beauty that moves me, I feel compelled to shine a light upon it, to recreate and express that beauty in a way I hope will resonate with the viewer.

I enjoyed drawing and painting from an early age and never tired of bringing creations to life on a blank sheet of paper. However, like many of us, life after school years, became busy working years, and while doing an occasional drawing, art was mostly left behind. In later life I now have the opportunity to return seriously to the easel.

I have a deep love for animals, and when I began painting again, these were my first subjects, later followed by still life. In painting animals, whether portraits or wildlife, I seek to capture the expression, emotion, and spirit in my portrayals, and strive to be an empathetic intermediary between the subject and the viewer.

In painting still life, comes the gentle calm of a moment held in time. The beauty found in everyday objects that go un-noticed during the rush of days, but whose simple beauty I attempt to portray in an intimate way that invites a pause, and a quiet contemplation in the viewer.
